Ali Azmat

Ali Azmat (Urdu: علی عظمت)
is a Pakistani musician born on April 20, 1970 in Abbottabad,
Pakistan. Gained recognition as the lead vocalist of the iconic sufi
rock band Junoon.



Early Career



Ali Azmat grew up in Lahore, which he blames for his unconventional
attitude. Stumbling in studies at home he went to study in Australia
for higher studies. Ali began singing professionally when he was
very young. He first joined the Lahore local band "Jupiters". Ali
Azmat sang Dosti while his time as a Jupiters member. He later sang
it as a Junoon member, where the song gained national fame and so
did the band. Ali Azmat than left Jupiters and shifted to Karachi to
start his professional music career.



Junoon



Junoon was South Asia' biggest band famous for combing traditional
poetry and instruments with rock music. With Junoon Ali Azmat has
toured with his band Junoon extensively, doing two North American
tours a year since 1992. He has performed in Europe, the Middle East
and China and at the Eurean rock festival, Roskilde in June 2000.
Ali left Junoon in 2006 to pursue a solo career.



Solo Career



His first solo album “Social Circus” was released in March 2005.
Social Circus has won 13 awards in Pakistan this year including Best
album, Best producer, Best single for “Na re Na,” and best new
video. In India, Ali was also nominated for Best Sound Track and
Best Song for his single ”Garaj Baras” for the Indian hit “Paap” by
Pooja Bhatt at the Sahara Awards London. At the first ever music
video awards held in Pakistan last year, the IM Music Video Awards,
rewarded Ali song ‘Na re na’ won the awards for ‘Best Video’, ‘Best
Costume’ and ‘Best Art Direction’ while ‘Deewana’ won the award for
‘Best Animation.’



Ali Azmat hosts a show called "Pappu Yar Tang Na Kar" for Aag
television. Azmat also starred in a telefilm, "ChaalBaz" in 2006
which was aired on ARY Digital. Ali has also worked with local pop
musicians such as Omran Shafique from Mauj and Gumby, the former
drummer of Noori. The show Pappu Yar was canceled due to poor
ratings.



Ali Azmat released his album 'Klashinfolk' in August 2008, The album
was recorded in Mekaal Hasan Studio. Ali Azmat has taken a bold step
changing the whole sound, bringing more raw music in Klashanfolk
album includes reggae rock style and also the album feature live
drums. According to Pakistan's two top newspapers, Dawn and Jang,
the album sales have been very slow and sluggish.
